Gameplay is pretty straightforward, and I appreciate it for not being too complicated. And the fun part is, they all have their own little stories and dialogue between stages and NONE of it really explains what brought them into the air space for dogfighting. Of the eight available characters, some range from totally sensible (some bald dude with a parrot) to strange choices (A robot? Well, ok) to insane (a dolphin. And yes, I’m being perfectly serious: Arthur is an infant from merry old England who is helming one of the ships. Are you an invading army of one? Are you liberating the people from bad decisions and a tyrannical government gone rogue? It doesn’t really matter in an arcade game, but I would like to know why a British baby felt the need to pilot and fight on a global scale. There’s a vague notion that you’re flying between different countries to shoot and destroy stuff, but I don’t know if it’s totally clear as to why. There isn’t really a plot to speak of in Aero Fighters 2. In fact, in comparison to shooting games of today, they still have a lot to brag about in terms of what set them apart. The Atari 2600 was notorious for having a wide choice of crappy yet intriguing games, and that was even true in the 90s.Īero Fighters 2, a NEO GEO vertical shmup is, thankfully, not crappy, but there’s no denying that the Aero Fighters line (several games and spiritual successors long) benefited from being stand apart from other shooters at the time. People think that flooding the Steam marketplace with games that either have strange humor, boobs or controversial ideas is special just due to the time frame, but that simply isn’t true. ![]() And, when it comes to video games, that expression is exceptionally true. In tough arcade shooters, it always pays to be aggressive and to terminate your enemies with extreme prejudice. You can’t rely on your ‘special bomb’ either… In Aero Fighters 2 the best form of defence is attack, but definitely while weaving all over the place… You only have a limited number of uses of this super weapon. The second button fires a ‘special bomb’ attack that devastates everything on-screen. The first button shoots your normal weapon (the power of which can be built-up by killing enemies and collecting power-ups, or by collecting a rare power-up that immediately gives you full firepower). I particularly liked the theme park level (reminded me of the superb Harmful Park), and the way the game tries to take you to landmarks around the world (yawn, yeah, I know, but it just looks so nice!) Boss battles are nuts… I love the huge stealth bombers that explode spectacularly, and the spider robot that backs off as it fights you.Īero Fighters 2 is a two-button game. Well, not really ‘fly’, but you know what I mean…Īero Fighters 2 is a seriously heavyweight arcade shooter, with tough survival requirements, and insane boss battles. It can be played single, or simultaneous two-player, and you can choose between eight different aircraft to fly. ![]() Aero Fighters 2 (also known as Sonic Wings 2) is a superb vertically-scrolling bullet hell shooter from 1994, developed by Video System and published by SNK on the Neo Geo.
